'La La Land' stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as two aspiring entertainers who help inspire each other and fall in love along the way. The director, Damien Chazelle also brought last year's wonderful 'Whiplash' and here he has brought to the table what could very well be the best film I will see all year. 'La La Land' is a beautiful, powerful, and highly charming throwback to Old Hollywood and the days of 'Singin' in the Rain' and 'A Star is Born'. The film expresses this love of old time films even down to it being presented in 'CINEMASCOPE' and the old fashioned beginning and end credits. Chazelle clearly shows his love of the craft here and brings his audience Broadway without the expenses.
The songs are written and performed with a strong variety, each ranging from light hearted to the somber jazz numbers and each one is a hit with this reviewer. I highly recommend the soundtrack on Amazon or iTunes for those who love old school musicals or fans of great film scores. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are at their very best, and just this evening received a Golden Globe for their performances here. They're believable, charming, emotional, and have strong development as you get to experience their entire relationship, both ups and downs. Fellow readers and lovers of the film industry, you truly owe it to yourselves to see 'La La Land' and experience one of the strongest movies you'll ever see. The film's themes, it's music, it's aspiring message to follow your dreams, and it's great actors and dance numbers all contribute to the best film of the year so far.
