Emma Stone is 'Cruella' in First Official Trailer

Disney has been in a rut lately. While financially successful, the studio's recent trend of converting their classics to live-action films have been mediocre at best and 2019's 'The Lion King' at worst. However this year looks to be a comeback of sorts for the company, with the March release of 'Raya and the Last Dragon' and today's topic, the upcoming origin film 'Cruella'.

The film is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and starring Emma Stone (La La Land), the film will tell the origin story of the young woman who became Cruella De Ville one of Disney's most evil villains. Today, we got our first look at the film which is set to release on May 28th which has been posted below.

'Cruella' looks to be taking quite the departure from your usual Disney fare, to the point where the internet has already dubbed it 'Disney Joker' on various social media outlets. This darker angle however in my opinion makes it a much better sell than just rehashing the story of '101 Dalmations' and though humanizing villains can backfire, such as was the case with 'Maleficent' this film looks to be trying its best to stand out.

Opinion time: My problems with these live-action remakes as of late has always been taking the material and simply redoing it even down to the script. While a remake in general isn't an ideal movie, it should at least try to change it up in a way that it can stand out as its own piece and 'Cruella' looks to be doing just that.

What are your thoughts on the new 'Cruella' film? Will you be seeing it in theaters or on Disney+? Let me know in the comments below.
