Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' is a welcome return to a series that was beginning to lose its way. This time, we connect to the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe and begin soon after 'Captain America: Civil War' in which our young webslinger played by Tom Holland is becoming restless and wanting to go out and help people like his mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downy Jr.) and the rest of the Avengers. His actions however will lead him into danger when he begins to fight against Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) also known as the Vulture that will put himself and his loved ones at risk.

I have to say first off that the 'Spider-Man' films have been a real hit & miss for me since they debuted almost twenty years ago now (crazy right?). The original directed by Sam Raimi opened the floodgates and showed that comic book flicks were for more than just the nerdy crowd. It is popular nowadays to talk negatively about the Raimi trilogy of films but frankly without them at the forefront, I don't believe this new film genre would be as prosperous as it is so all I gotta say is show a little respect. Now, that's not to say those earlier films were perfect mind you, in fact 'Spider-Man 2' was probably the last film in the series I truly enjoyed and don't even get me started on the 'Amazing' series.

So yes, to put your fears to rest 'Homecoming' is a much better film than the last three we got but is it perfected at this point? Well, yes for the most part but in the overall scale of things it does feel like just another Marvel movie for the summertime. The one thing that really bothers me about the entire MCU despite the movies being really entertaining and well made is that they all just seem forever unfinished and what we're left with is 'To Be Continued' style rushed endings and sometimes the entire film itself.  The main issues I have with this specific film would be the endless PC and SJW material that attempts to be stealthy in its execution but comes off as obvious and completely unnecessary.

What I DID like about 'Homecoming' is the cast and the way the film goes about portraying its characters, especially those of Peter and Toomes. Villains in these types of movies are very hard to get right but when they do they go over the top with it. Michael Keaton has always been a favorite of mine and here he still does his very best. You get to see a villain who doesn't just do bad things for the hell of it, but rather he feels that he's keeping his family under a roof and well fed by committing crimes. He's a desperate and lost soul who doesn't just want the world to burn like a Joker or become rich like Hans Gruber. I think this makes him more human and you feel for him, even if it doesn't justify the things he does you at least understand his motives.

Tom Holland is Peter Parker! By far, he's the best portrayal of the character I have seen in media form. He acts and looks like a real teenager whereas the previous actors always looked and acted a little to mature to really fit the role well. This is Spider-Man as I imagined him reading the comic books all these years and I know you will be satisfied there at the very least. The film is also very well written as is most Marvel films of late. The director Jon Watts, whose only done two films up until now (Clown & Cop Car) also co-wrote the screenplay. This is a man of clear talent when only his third feature film is this impressive. Be sure to check out those first two as well, they provide just as much entertainment.

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' is the comeback the wall crawler truly needed and I'm glad to see my favorite Marvel hero back on the big screen and back on top. The minor issues of unnecessary additions, changes and rushed feeling are overall minor when given the film as a whole but they are there and you may feel that they affect you more than I. It's likely to be drowned out in the sea of other superhero films down the line, but it's still a fun ride that I don't regret taking. Also, be sure to check out the very end after the credits for one of the funniest post credit scenes in the MCU series.
