Upcoming Movies (2017) (APRIL/MAY)
SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE
While I am the last person to watch a 'Smurfs' film, especially when we're talking about the first two live-action outings, 'The Lost Village' may have me eating my words. The original cartoon was never my first choice to watch on Saturday morning, however I think that this film can truly benefit from being an animated outing. Time will tell this spring, but I actually have some hope here.
THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS
The 8th entry in the popular franchise is heading our way and looks to be more of the same fun popcorn entertainment it's known for. Vin Deisel's Dominic has seemingly turned on his crew after the seduction of a mysterious antagonist (Charlize Theron). Cue car chases with some submarines thrown in there. What more could an action flick fan want?
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2
Starlord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and yes Baby Groot are all back for the long-awaited sequel to my personal favorite Marvel film to date. Looking to have even better action sequences, even better jokes, and of course more Baby Groot (So adorable) this can't possibly be a downer.
KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD
Guy Ritchie of 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'SNATCH' fame brings us the 500th adaptation of the classic tale...only with extra stylized camera work, slow motion battles, and self-referential humor and over-the-top violence. So..'Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Excaliburs'.
ALIEN: COVENANT
2012's 'Prometheus' left a lot to be desired, but with Ridley Scott's next follow up to the 'Alien' franchise looks to make up for the many, many mistakes 'Prometheus' made. Going back to traditional Xenomorph action and horror, this will be a big summer flick that shouldn't be missed.
DIARY OF A WIMPY KID
Based on the children's book series, the third entry in the film adaptation is set to be released this May. Very little info has been revealed other than the book's summary which I won't spoil here. The first two were fun little flicks to take the kiddies to, so I'd expect about the same here. Nothing but harmless fun.
PIRATES: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES
Javier Bardem joins the cast along with the return of Johnny Depp as Captain Sparrow, who is searching for the mysterious Trident of Poseidon with Bardem's Captain Salazar hot on his trail.
BAYWATCH
The recent trend of 'TV to Film' adaptations has been interesting to say the least. Taking a teen soap opera such as '21 Jump Street' and turn it into a raunchy 'R' rated comedy was an unlikely recipe for success and with March's ' 'CHiPs' and 'Baywatch' they look to be attempting that same spark thrice. Who knows how this will go, but I will remain optimistic as with 'Jump Street' I was proven wrong twice over so we'll just have to see.
