Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince (2009)

The sixth book and film both share the same flaws and the same positives. It's that unfortunate chapter that is built to set up the epic finale while in turn sacrificing much of what makes an interesting story. The film seems to strictly be built around setting up future subplots instead of having its own premise with interludes of said setups throughout. We actually focus on Dumbledore and Draco Malfoy for the most part here, with the former getting the better treatment than the latter. Now, even with all the negatives I have to say about the film I do enjoy the Dumbledore sequences here and I think he really gets his time to shine. We get to see the most details of his history here and it's at least nice to see the character get some development.

Malfoy on the other hand has a really poor side story this time around, even if it is important to the overall narrative. He's being trained to essentially kill Dumbledore and works as a mole inside Hogwarts for Voldemort but for the most part, we get an uncharacteristically whiny Malfoy. He's just annoying here and always seems to be crying and yes I know he's supposed to be conflicted with himself but I just don't care. After all this time, I just cannot feel sympathy for this character I don't believe he has earned it and this is the first time in the series that he shows any sign of regret for what he's done so far so yeah, this didn't work for me.

And as for Harry and his friends, I'm hard pressed to remember them doing a whole lot even though they do. I have to be honest, even after seeing the film again just now I still can't remember a whole lot about this one. The bad and bland outweighs the good too much here and the film is merely a precursor to the one we all wanted to see in the first place. The film is recommended due to continuity's sake, but as a film it's rather forgettable. You have a fantasy action film with very little of either here.

P.S. How did this film get a 'PG' when the previous ones are '13'? We have zombies and bloody stab wounds, along with some nice family friendly torture and the death of one of the most beloved characters in the books. Not traumatizing at all.
