WESTWORLD (TV) Episode 1

'Westworld' is now a television series on HBO/HBO GO created by Jonathan Nolan & JJ Abrams and while we normally don't tackle TV here, this one is well worth talking about. I found a new favorite show to binge on this season. The show follows the basics of the Michael Crichton film, with the theme park known as 'Westworld' where guests can come and live their fantasies, indulge in violence and sex and other debauchery only for the robot inhabitants to begin displaying suspicious and violent behavior. The show starts off with a big bang and keeps its momentum for an hour. It's still unknown whether it can keep this pace for a whole season, but if this pilot is anything to go by we're going to have a great HBO show to add to our favorites list.

For those who have seen the film or are unfamiliar with HBO's usual drama style, this show is brutal and vicious with little to no fun or light tones in sight. The show's goal seems to be exploring the themes of the movie much further with sinister twists and turns that are sure to come our way with every episode. The show's cast is fantastic, with Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins, and Evan Rachel Wood standing out giving great performances as we've come to expect. The show develops its main cast rather well and evenly with a few left behind due to time constraints but overall as far as television pilots go, I got a good impression of every character's motivations and immediately found characters to both hate and love.

Where the show tends to stumble is that this concept is very deep and has so many layers to it that one episode is only scratching the surface, leaving us with so many more questions. 'Can a human guest be killed in the park?' 'How can guests tell the difference?' 'Why is Ed Harris the only one who seems to be self-aware of his existence?' 'Why do the robots seemingly have a map of some kind under their scalp?' It sounds much more like a nitpick, but I really want to know these things NOW!

'Westworld' may not be the best HBO series, but it's certainly great television and I recommend hoping the DELOS train to book your stay at 'WESTWORLD'.
