Upcoming Films (2017) (Day Two)
February is our next month here on the upcoming calendar. Let me know in the comments what your most anticipated film of 2017 and beyond will be.
FEBRUARY
RINGS is the third film in the long dormant franchise about a killer video tape that curses all who watch it, killing them within seven days. This film looks to push the envelope a whole two inches by making the tape into a viral YouTube video...yay? Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm but it's likely many of you are feeling the same thing here. The film was pushed back from October to early Winter due to competition with 'Blair Witch' (which didn't do as well as expected so this seemed like a rather unneeded move). This franchise and this sub-genre is dead people, let's hope this is the last breath old Sadako will ever breathe.
THE SPACE BETWEEN US will tell the story of an Martian-born child who visits Earth for the first time in his life with fresh eyes. This sounds like a very intriguing premise and one can hope that the various production troubles and delay from last summer till now will not be a negative sign. This film sports a strong cast, wonderful production value, and a great director so here's hoping.
THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is the sequel/spinoff of the surprise smash hit 'The Lego Movie' which I personally really loved and this looks to keep the fun and laughter coming at lightning speed. Many returning cast members including Wil Arnett as the titular caped crusader along with the same crew as the original will surely help skyrocket this film to the box office nirvana.
JOHN WICK CHAPTER 2 continues with Keanu Reeves returning as a deadly assassin for hire who once again is summoned out of retirement as everyone is out for his blood after John's past comes back to haunt him. 'John Wick' was a truly unique action film that became a cult hit back in 2014 with its fast paced action and wild gunplay you wouldn't even see in many John Woo flicks. This one is destined to be a surefire pick for any action film junkie.
FIFTY SHADES DARKER continues the story of Ana and Charles Gray and their disturbing and frankly creepy S&M relationship. Based upon the popular series of novels, this film is going to make some serious bank despite the original's rather lukewarm critical and audience reception. I personally feel various negative feelings toward this franchise which I won't disclose here. What I will say is if you like the series, you're going no matter what I say. Most of the general audience will likely stay away.
PATIENT ZERO stars Matt Smith and Stanley Tucci as they attempt to fight off a horde of genetically enchanced zombie mutants. Surprisingly not much information could be found about this film despite its A-List cast and its premise will likely draw most horror/action fans. Still though, this premise is nothing new but hey who knows? 'World War Z' was supposed to be gold and look how that film turned out despite its strong presence.
FIST FIGHT is a High School comedy about a timid mild-mannered teacher just trying to get through the final days of the spring semester, only to be tangled up in a playground fight with another aggressive teacher (Ice Cube). The trailers show some promise here, but with comedy bombs coming left and right these last few months one can only hope Ice Cube can elevate 'Fist Fight' up there.
ROCK DOG is a new animated film about an aspiring canine musician and his feline friend struggling to make music history. A strange concept to be sure, but this one may turn out to be another 'Kubo and the Two Strings'. I don't expect much in terms of box office performance, but this one looks to be another fun family film with something for both young and old.
A CURE FOR WELLNESS comes from director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, The Weather Man) and is a disturbing journey through a special treatment and medical spa high in the Swiss mountains that may be hiding some truly horrifying secrets from its clientele. The trailer alone got me hooked for this one, with its eerie use of The Ramones' 'I Wanna Be Sedated'. I'm always up for great horror and this looks to be the first biggie of the year.
GET OUT is a new horror film directed by comedian Jordan Peele (Keanu) about an interracial couple who travel to a mysterious home town that may in fact be haunted. Everything about this film sounds rather interesting to be honest despite the typical 'ghost' scenarios. Having an interracial couple that are well written and realistically portrayed is something the horror genre has rarely worked out right. For many hearing that comedian Jordan Peele is directing and writing this thing caused some confusion but as always talented people can surprise you in many ways. Check out the trailer on YouTube if you're curious.
March is next up folks. Have a wonderful evening and save some tickets for me.
