Westworld (1973)

'Westworld' comes from the mind of Michael Crichton who both writes and directs here. The film is about the theme park of the future, where anyone can satisfy their deepest desires and indulge in their wildest and sleaziest fantasies. All goes well for two newcomers (James Coburn and Richard Benjamin) until a mysterious computer malfunction causes the robots of Westworld to rebel and kill the guests, with one particular (Yul Brenner) with a score to settle with the two guests.

'Jurassic Park' is what will likely come to mind when first reading the plot, and you'd be correct in that assumption as Crichton took inspiration from this when writing the now classic 1990 novel and subsequent Spielberg film. The author is at his best when discussing themes of chaos theory, technology becoming the downfall of man, and human nature and here it's no different. 'Westworld' is a great sci-fi film with a quick pace, well done suspense, and some great visual flair and it's surprising to see that not many people I know were even aware of the film until the recent HBO show (check back for that review later) as its well worth the time sitting through it. It's doesn't even hit an hour and a half so you really have nothing to lose here.

While the film does look dated in its special effects and in some of its dialogue the film's themes, its actors, and its unique and fun setting is sure to keep your interest. Check out Westworld by DELOS (Boy, do we have a vacation for you).
