This weekend looks to have a little more to offer than last weekend's rather lackluster picks. First off, we have another Disney film in Steven Spielberg's 'THE BFG' which looks like it will be taking the number one spot this weekend. The film is a charming live adaptation of the children's novel by 'Willy Wonka' author Roald Dahl and has the strongest audience appeal of the trio of films releasing. I'm betting on this one as well being the better of the trio as well, although Spielberg will probably meet some friction with fans of the book and critics.
Meanwhile, on the far side of the movie spectrum, the most likely silver medal of the weekend will be 'THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR'. The previous films in the franchise all have made large profits with very little budget and they have become the summer 'Paranormal Activity' of sorts. Hopefully, we don't see this franchise go into the mud (of course we will though, I get my hopes up to high sometimes). 'Election Year' will more than likely get a harsh review average (I personally am predicting somewhere in the 40% range on Rotten Tomatoes right now.) but the fans are too strong for films like this at the moment to cause any issues.
Finally, we have 'LEGEND OF TARZAN' which for a summer blockbuster has been all but lost upon the audiences it seems. I only started to see a big marketing push for the film just a few months ago, and wasn't even aware of its existence for a whole year. Warner Bros. seems to be trying to let this one come and die off slowly despite its good casting and overall, the film doesn't look all that bad. I wouldn't hold my breath for 'Tarzan' to reach very high on the weekend charts come July 4th weekend.
If we had to predict the total weekend B.O. now, we're looking at this estimate below:
(#1) The BFG
(#2) The Purge: Election Year
(#3) Finding Dory
(#4) Legend of Tarzan
(#5) Independence Day: Resurgence
Let me know below what film you're most excited to see this 4th of July.
