The Conjuring is directed by James Wan and stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the real-life investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate a family's country home, hoping to drive the evil spirit that haunts it away. James Wan is a very talented director, rarely missing that dartboard when it comes to his films. While the original 'SAW' film was groundbreaking and influential without a doubt in the horror genre, it hasn't aged well and spawned many deplorable sequels and rip-offs in the years to come. Where Wan shines I believe is in his ghost films (Insidious and Dead Silence) where he is able to show off his brilliant eye for style and camera work. The Conjuring is filmed brilliantly with the use of camera techniques that were popular at the time the film is set (1971). This retro style cinematography has rarely worked this well, and brings the atmosphere far past the bar and through the roof.
The performances her are also top notch. No one stands out to me as generic or bland, these all feel like real people (which they were so...there you go). Everyone does great, that is not common in ANY film let alone the horror genre. James Wan has said that he was inspired by 70's horror cinema for most of his ghost films (The Entity being the largest by far) and this inspiration has worked for him in spades. I cannot say enough good things about 'The Conjuring'. It is one of those rare horror films where it works on every single level. It's scary, it's atmospheric and beautiful to look at, and the acting is even amazing. This will be a first on this review site, but there is nothing I didn't like about 'The Conjuring'. This film blows me away and the sequel will have a lot to live up to.
